On Tuesday, the Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office announced that Frederick resident Mario Samm has been sentenced to 60 years in prison with all but 55 years to serve, followed by five years of probation for his role in the 25-year-old Darvish's death in December 2021.
According to court documents, on Dec. 23, 2021, officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police were called to a Circle Gate Drive apartment in Germantown to investigate a shooting, where they found Darvish "obviously (dead)" and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
During an altercation, Samm fired seven rounds from two firearms inside Darvish's apartment, striking the victim three times, with one of the other bullets went through the floor into an apartment unit below. There were no additional injuries.
Samm was later linked to the shooting through a Ring doorbell camera, and eye witnesses who were able to provide the police with his social media accounts.
While investigating, police found Instagram posts from Samm in the weeks before the shooting, including at least one that showed him with one of the guns to be used in the fatal shooting.
Darvish had apparently been working as a rapper under the name Echalty. His social media pages includes several photos of him holding stacks of cash.
The rapper was remembered in an outpouring of support as being sweet and caring.
Samm was convicted of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence.
"Thanks to the hard work of Montgomery County Police detectives and Assistant State’s Attorneys Jim Dietrich and Kyle O’Grady, this senseless act of violence will be met with severe consequences," State's Attorney John McCarthy said in a statement. "(Samm) not only took the life of the victim, but also put other people in harm’s way when he fired weapons inside of the apartment building.
"We are grateful that justice has been served in this case and we express our deepest condolences to Darvish’s family who will forever be impacted by this loss."
